This family suffered from a challenge common among many Calgary neighbourhoods developed in the 60’s and 70’s - a small kitchen and lack of storage space. The most important aspect of proper renovation design is identifying problems first, so our discussions started by determining what were the most frustrating aspects of the existing home, then determining how they envisioned living in the home after the renovation, and how it could improve their lives. A growing family, and the need for better flow, more storage space and functionality lead us to increasing the space with a 8’ by 20’ addition to the rear of the home, which allowed us to increase the size of the kitchen and provide a garden door to the rear deck for easy access to the BBQ, as well as encompassing a spacious mudroom for coats, boots, kids hockey bags and a freezer. No more hockey bags in the living room…winning!

The party always ends up in the kitchen. So why not embrace it? For this couple of foodies, entertaining at home was a top priority for their kitchen renovation. We started by opening up the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a bright, open space. From there, we designed a 10 foot x 3-1/2 foot island with integral sink, that functions as both food prep area, and gathering space. So while the chef is preparing meals, he or she (or in their case, usually both) can carry on the conversation with guests while they enjoy a cocktail. They opted for bright white cabinets with offsetting grey island for a contemporary, yet timeless look. The dining room facing the rear yard was designed to let the outdoors in by installing a huge, 3 panel patio door that also offered easy and convenient access to the BBQ for those warm summer days when the party migrates outdoors.
